There is a wide a range of useful free project management software available, which are both fit for purpose and high performance open source alternatives to proprietry applications. Such simple tools, which support effective organisation and planning, are frequently overlooked while there is a tendancy to opt for costly proprietry options without any consideration of the alternatives. I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface here, but below are just a few of the useful alternatives available (a few others are given on the links page):
For project diagramming MS Word is frequently overlooked simply because many users do not realise that it comes with effective diagramming tools which are straightforward to use. Armed with this knowledge you may be able to avoid additional outlay on your software licenses.
If more detailed diagramming is required, there is a free open-source diagramming alternative available in a package known as Dia, which performs pretty well against proprietry alternatives.
Project-in-a-Box is a great tool for administrating Prince 2 projects and offers readymade document and file structures for managing each Prince 2 stage. The community edition is free (even for commercial use), and for larger project teams there is a beefier pro version.
If you are interested in harnessing the cost benefits of free and open-source software packages, then have a look at my software licensing page or call 07876765317 to book a consultation.
