I am a Prince 2 qualified project manager who has been managing sucessful third-party projects through my company FourSquare Innovations for the past three years now. In addition, I have also been involved in projects for a number of banks and PLCs over the years.
I have diverse technical experience and knowledge in areas such as web technologies, data migration, IT training, and software license management among others. Outside of IT I have been involved in projects for the oil and gas industry, international trade, banking and finance and education to name a few.
Academically, I have a first class BA, MA and PhD in English and a wealth of teaching and training experience.
Where PM methodology is concerned I like to be able to implement a blend of Prince 2 and Agile methodolgies. This lends the control and structure of Prince, while allowing for the flexibility and innovation inherent in Agile strategies to shine through. For me this is a balanced and practical way to approach a project, and requires a sensitivity towards knowing when to take managerial control and when to loosen the managerial grip. Simply put, Prince gives the focus and direction needed for a successful project, and when combined with Agile, this allows sufficient well-managed creativity to seep through to ensure that the end product has a competitive edge and market advantage.
I must also confess an aversion to 6 Sigma methodologies. I often hear 6 Sigma justified on the basis that it's derived from the way the Romans built viaducts e.t.c. Since the Romans used indentured and slave labour, and nailed people to pieces of wood when project tolerances were exceeded, I find the underlying ethos of 6 Sigma to be fundamentally flawed for use in 21st-century project management.
